In a poignant finale to Alberta Ballet’s season, the production of “Der Wolf” and “The Rite of Spring” not only marks the end of the company’s show calendar but also the retirement of twin sisters Alexandra and Jennifer Gibson after over 15 years of dedicated service.

The sisters, who have been an integral part of Alberta Ballet since childhood, are gracefully bowing out of their illustrious careers after the conclusion of the performance. Having begun their dance journey at the age of nine, both Alexandra and Jennifer have shared the stage together for decades, making their synchronized retirement a fitting conclusion to their time with Alberta Ballet.

Reflecting on their remarkable journey, Alexandra expressed gratitude for the enriching experiences and shared memories at Alberta Ballet, while Jennifer highlighted standout performances in productions like Christopher Anderson’s “Cinderella” and Helen Pickett’s “Petal” as cherished moments in their careers.

Francesco Ventriglia, Alberta Ballet’s new artistic director, lauded the twins’ unique artistry and contributions to the company, emphasizing their distinct talents despite their striking similarities. Ventriglia commended their dedication over the past 15 seasons and expressed gratitude on behalf of Alberta Ballet for their invaluable contributions.

The retirement of the Gibson sisters is part of a broader transition within Alberta Ballet, with several other dancers bidding farewell after their performances in “Der Wolf” and “The Rite of Spring.” Ventriglia praised their exceptional contributions and expressed confidence in their future endeavors beyond the ballet stage.

“Der Wolf” and “The Rite of Spring” offer audiences captivating narratives and rich artistic experiences. Ventriglia described “Der Wolf” as a reinterpretation of the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale, while “The Rite of Spring” carries a legacy of controversy and artistic innovation since its premiere in 1913.

As the production continues at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium until May 4, followed by performances at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on May 10 and 11, audiences have the opportunity to witness the final performances of Alexandra and Jennifer Gibson, marking the end of an era in Alberta Ballet’s history.
