Halifax Regional Police are investigating a shooting at Africville Park that left five people injured during the 41st Annual Africville Family Reunion on Saturday night. Officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots at around 10 p.m., where two men allegedly exchanged gunfire, with stray bullets hitting attendees in the crowd.

The victims were promptly taken to the hospital, with one individual sustaining injuries that are considered life-threatening.

In the wake of the incident, Halifax Mayor Mike Savage expressed his condolences via social media. Nova Scotia NDP leader Claudia Chender also shared her sentiments, stating, “It is tragic to see the important annual Africville Reunion gathering marred by senseless violence. My heart is with all those present and the organizers who worked so hard to bring this celebration to life.”

Irvine Carvery, a board member of the Africville Genealogy Society, announced the cancellation of all remaining activities and events for this year’s reunion. “Given the events of Saturday night, all further activities and events have been cancelled for this year’s 41st Annual Africville Family Reunion. Thoughts and prayers are with the families affected. God bless,” Carvery said.

The Africville Family Reunion is a significant event that celebrates the heritage and community spirit of Africville, a historic Black community in Halifax.

Halifax Regional Police have urged the public to avoid Africville Park as the investigation continues. “The investigation is in its early stages,” police stated, indicating that they are working diligently to gather information and ensure the safety of the community.
