France is set to host an extravagant Olympics opening ceremony through the heart of Paris on Friday, aiming to dazzle the world while contending with significant security challenges and geopolitical tensions. The event marks the beginning of a highly anticipated Games, with the backdrop of ongoing conflicts and heightened security concerns.

To ensure the safety of the parade along the river Seine, its banks, and surrounding landmarks, a comprehensive security operation has been implemented. Approximately 45,000 police officers, 10,000 soldiers, and 2,000 private security personnel will be deployed. This unprecedented display of security underscores the seriousness with which French authorities are approaching the event.

The opening ceremony will feature a procession of barges carrying nearly 7,000 athletes along the Seine, passing by Paris’s most iconic landmarks. An estimated 300,000 spectators are expected to watch from the riverbanks, adding to the grandeur of the occasion.

The Games take place against a backdrop of international conflict, including wars in Ukraine and Gaza. Despite these tensions, French officials have stated that there is no specific threat to the opening ceremony or the Games themselves. Nevertheless, the country remains on high alert.

Authorities have invoked powers granted under an anti-terror law to place 155 individuals under surveillance, restricting their movements as part of the security measures. Additionally, Israeli competitors will receive 24-hour protection from elite tactical units throughout the Olympics.

The presence of numerous world leaders in Paris for the ceremony necessitates heightened security measures, including snipers on rooftops, riverbed sweeps for bombs, and the closure of Paris’s airspace. For the duration of the Games, radar-surveillance planes, Reaper drones, and Mirage 2000 fighter jets will monitor sensitive sites and intercept any unauthorized aircraft.

French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed confidence in the country’s readiness to host the Games, emphasizing the presence of the Olympic rings and urging everyone to enjoy the event. Macron, who is in his second term, hoped that the Olympics would bolster his legacy. However, his failed attempt to secure a snap legislative election has weakened his position, casting a shadow over this significant moment on the international stage.

The extensive security measures have caused some frustration among locals. The police have imposed a security zone along the river, erecting metal barriers and requiring authorization passes with QR codes to enter certain areas. This has led to quieter-than-usual activity along the usually bustling banks of the Seine, particularly affecting cafes and businesses in the vicinity.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has impacted the participation of Russian athletes. Due to the invasion of Ukraine, Russia’s typically large delegation has been reduced to 15 athletes who have met eligibility requirements to compete as neutrals. Similarly, Belarus will send 17 athletes competing under neutral status. Ukraine, on the other hand, is sending its smallest contingent since the collapse of the Soviet Union, with 140 athletes participating.
