The Canadian government’s decision to purchase a $9-million condo on Manhattan’s “Billionaires’ Row” for official use is under parliamentary review. The Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates has summoned Tom Clark, Canada’s Consul General in New York City, and other officials to justify the expense. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly may also be called.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) confirmed the acquisition of a unit in Steinway Tower at 111 West 57th St.

The condo, intended for networking and official events, replaces the outdated residence at 550 Park Ave. This move, recommended by the department, is projected to save taxpayers over $2 million by reducing maintenance and property taxes.

Conservative MP Kelly Block criticized the purchase as indicative of poor spending controls. Bloc Quebecois MP Julie Vignola supported the call for examination, noting the high cost in comparison to average incomes. The committee has requested a third-party property assessment and a list of all properties considered for the consulate’s residence.

Former diplomat and Senator Peter Boehm defended the expense, emphasizing the importance of a prominent location for promoting Canadian culture and trade. He argued that Canada’s diplomatic residences are generally mid-tier compared to other nations.

Under Stephen Harper’s Conservative government, a program to sell and downsize properties was initiated, including the $530-million sale of Macdonald House in London. Proceeds were used for renovations, with significant savings directed back to the treasury.
