Canada to Unveil Defence Spending Plan at NATO Summit

Canada is poised to reveal its detailed strategy to meet NATO defence spending targets, addressing ongoing concerns surrounding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at this week’s NATO summit in Washington, D.C.

NATO member countries have collectively agreed to allocate a minimum of 2% of their national gross domestic product (GDP) towards defence. Historically, Canada has not met this benchmark, prompting scrutiny from its allies. A senior government official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, disclosed that Canada will present a comprehensive timeline and additional information about its plan on Thursday.

The three-day NATO summit concludes today, with Trudeau set to engage in discussions with new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other global leaders.

Prime Minister Trudeau remains committed to bolstering support for Ukraine, amidst the ongoing conflict and increasing aggression from Russia. The war-torn nation continues to be a central focus for NATO’s unified support efforts.

In a significant move, Canada pledged an additional $500 million in military aid to Ukraine following a direct conversation between Trudeau and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday.
