Big Brother Canada cancelled
Corus Entertainment, the parent company of Global News, has announced the end of the popular reality competition series “Big Brother Canada.” The show’s 12th season, which recently concluded on Global TV, will be its last.
In a memo from Global and Corus, the company expressed pride in the series’ success and its role in showcasing the diversity of Canada both in front of and behind the camera. “The series has been a leader in the reality TV space, always prioritizing the rich diversity of Canada in front of and behind the camera, and Corus is extremely proud of its unprecedented success across our platforms over the last 12 seasons,” the memo read.
Corus cited several reasons for the show’s cancellation, including audience trends, support from sponsors and advertisers, and production and licensing costs. These factors contributed to the decision to end the series, despite its popularity and impact on Canadian television.
“Big Brother Canada” was one of several international spinoffs of the original Dutch show. It featured contestants, known as “houseguests,” who lived together in isolation from the outside world. Their mental, physical, and emotional strength were tested through weekly competitions, where they vied for prizes and titles such as “Head of Household” and “Power of Veto.” The last remaining houseguest at the end of each season won a substantial cash prize.
Troy Reeb, Co-Chief Executive Officer of Corus Entertainment, praised the show’s success and its impact on the Canadian media landscape. “Today as we say goodbye to the beloved series, we celebrate the great success and impact ‘Big Brother Canada’ has had in our country and in the Canadian media landscape for over a decade,” Reeb said in a statement. “Global will always be proud to have been home to ‘Big Brother Canada’ for 12 seasons.”
The official Big Brother Canada Instagram account shared the news of the cancellation, calling it “the end of an era.” The post thanked fans for their support and reminisced about the memorable moments created by each group of houseguests. “Season after season, each group of Houseguests delivered their own unique dynamic and iconic moments that we will never forget,” the post read. “But most of all, we are so thankful to have been able to go on this journey with you, the incredible Big Brother Canada fans.”
The cancellation of “Big Brother Canada” marks the end of a significant chapter in Canadian reality television. Over its 12-season run, the show has left a lasting legacy, celebrating diversity and creating unforgettable moments for fans across the country. As Corus Entertainment and Global TV bid farewell to the series, they do so with pride in its contributions to the media landscape and gratitude to the dedicated fanbase that supported it through the years.
