Pakistan has expressed regret over the United States’ decision to veto a draft resolution seeking Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations (UN), as well as disappointment over the UN Security Council’s inability to reach a consensus on the matter. Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch conveyed Pakistan’s sentiments during her weekly press briefing on Friday.

The Security Council blocked Palestine’s bid for full UN membership after a US veto on a resolution widely supported by other member states. The proposal, presented by Algeria, garnered 12 votes in favor but faced opposition from the US, with Switzerland and the United Kingdom abstaining.

Baloch emphasized Pakistan’s belief in Palestine’s right to UN membership, describing it as a step towards rectifying historic injustices endured by Palestinians. She reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Palestine’s self-determination and sovereignty, advocating for a sovereign Palestinian state with its capital in Quds Al-Sharif.

Regarding diplomatic engagements, Baloch highlighted the recent visit of a high-powered Saudi delegation to Islamabad, aimed at enhancing cooperation in various sectors following discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. Discussions during the visit encompassed investment projects in energy, mining, IT, construction, and human resource development.

Responding to queries, Baloch criticized India’s stance on Kashmir, describing it as unfortunate and emphasizing India’s responsibility to implement UN resolutions on the issue. She also condemned Indian authorities for restricting religious events in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), citing curbs on religious leaders and congregations as violations of Muslims’ religious freedom.

Baloch reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for Kashmiris’ right to self-determination, pledging continued moral, political, and diplomatic backing in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
