Chief Justice Vows Zero Tolerance for Judicial Interference

In a significant development, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa announced on Wednesday that the Supreme Court of Pakistan is taking a firm stance against any interference in judicial affairs. The announcement came during a pivotal hearing conducted by a seven-member SC bench, led by Chief Justice Isa himself, to address allegations raised by Islamabad High Court judges regarding interference by intelligence agencies.

The Chief Justice reiterated the court’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the independence and integrity of the judiciary. He underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that the SC will not tolerate any external influence on judicial matters.

The hearing was adjourned until April 29, signifying the court’s commitment to thoroughly examining the issue.

During the hearing, Attorney General for Pakistan, Mansoor Usman Awan, presented arguments on behalf of the government, assuring full support for judicial autonomy. Awan outlined the government’s proactive measures, including the establishment of an inquiry commission headed by former Chief Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jilani.

Justice Athar Minallah raised concerns over potential political engineering, urging for a transparent investigation into the matter. He emphasized the need for thorough scrutiny to address allegations of intimidation and interference effectively.

The hearing was adjourned until April 29, signifying the court’s commitment to thoroughly examining the issue. This development follows a petition by approximately 300 lawyers urging the SC to exercise suo motu jurisdiction under Article 184(3) of the Constitution.

The recent events stem from a letter penned by six IHC judges, highlighting concerns of intelligence agency interference. Despite initial attempts to address the issue through an inquiry commission, the SC opted to intervene directly, reflecting the seriousness of the allegations.
