Pakistan condemns Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran
Pakistan has condemned the assassination of Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday, expressing deep shock at the timing of the act.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan reiterated its stance against terrorism in all its forms, including extrajudicial and extraterritorial killings, regardless of the motives.
“Pakistan condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including extrajudicial and extraterritorial killings irrespective of the motives,” the spokesperson stated.
Pakistan extended its condolences to Haniyeh’s family and the people of Palestine, expressing shock at the timing of the assassination, which coincided with the inauguration of Iran’s President, an event attended by several foreign dignitaries, including Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister.
“We are deeply shocked by the timing of this reckless act, coinciding with the inauguration of the President of Iran, an event attended by several foreign dignitaries, including the Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan,” the statement read.
Pakistan called out Israel for the attack, viewing it as a serious concern and a dangerous escalation in an already volatile region. “Its latest acts constitute a dangerous escalation in an already volatile region and undermine efforts for peace.”
Haniyeh, a prominent leader of the Palestinian resistance group, was in Iran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of reformist president Masoud Pezeshkian when he was killed at his residence.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed after their residence in Tehran was targeted. According to Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA, Haniyeh was attacked with an airborne guided projectile that struck his house in northern Tehran around 2 am local time.
