Mohsin Naqvi Set to Become President of Asian Cricket Council
Mohsin Naqvi, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is poised to take on the prestigious role of President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), sources reported to Geo News on Tuesday. Naqvi’s appointment is set to commence in January 2025, marking the start of his two-year tenure at the helm of the regional cricketing body.
Naqvi will succeed India’s Jay Shah, who is currently serving as the ACC President. Shah, who is also the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was appointed ACC President in 2021 and had his term extended by an additional year in January 2024. The presidency of the ACC rotates among member countries, ensuring representation and leadership diversity across the region.
The official announcement of Naqvi’s appointment is anticipated to follow the next ACC meeting, scheduled for October-November this year.
This transition underscores the collaborative spirit and shared governance among Asian cricketing nations.
Mohsin Naqvi, who took over as PCB Chairman in February for a three-year term, also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister. Balancing these significant responsibilities, Naqvi has made strategic decisions to ensure effective management within the PCB. Geo News reports that Naqvi will delegate some of his cricket-related duties to Waqar Younis, former captain of the Pakistan cricket team.
Younis, a veteran pacer, will serve as Naqvi’s advisor on cricket affairs, overseeing critical aspects such as international and domestic cricket issues, the selection committee, and the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for players. This division of responsibilities is in line with the PCB Constitution of 2014, which permits the chairman to share or delegate powers to another official.
As Naqvi prepares to assume his role as ACC President, the cricketing community anticipates a dynamic and effective leadership that will further enhance the development and promotion of cricket across Asia. His extensive experience and strategic vision are expected to contribute significantly to the growth and success of the sport in the region.
