Obama Endorses Kamala Harris for Democratic Presidential Nominee
Barack Obama has officially endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic presidential nominee, putting an end to days of speculation regarding his support. The endorsement from the former President and ex-First Lady Michelle Obama comes with a strong affirmation of Harris’s qualifications and capabilities.
In a joint statement, the Obamas expressed their confidence in Harris, stating that she possesses the “vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands.” This endorsement follows a series of consultations Harris had with over 100 prominent Democrats after President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the race last Sunday.
While Obama had previously praised Biden’s decision to exit the race, he refrained from endorsing Harris at that time. However, with Harris already having secured the support of a majority of Democratic delegates, the endorsement from the Obamas solidifies her path to becoming the official nominee at the Democratic party convention in August.
The Obamas’ statement highlighted Harris’s extensive experience, citing her roles as California’s attorney general, a US senator, and the vice-president. They emphasized that beyond her impressive resume, Harris has the necessary qualities to lead the nation through these challenging times. “There is no doubt in our mind that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people,” the statement read.
A video accompanied the statement, showing Harris’s emotional reaction to the Obamas’ pledge of support. “Oh my goodness,” Harris exclaimed in the clip, “Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me.”
In the days following Biden’s withdrawal, Harris has actively campaigned across the United States. One notable event was her address to the American Federation of Teachers union in Houston, which had the atmosphere of a campaign rally with enthusiastic applause from the audience. During her speech, Harris criticized “extremist” Republicans and their “failed” policies, aligning with her campaign rhetoric from earlier events in the week. “We want to ban assault weapons, and they want to ban books,” she remarked.
Meanwhile, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump intensified his attacks on Harris, labeling her as a “radical left Marxist” in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. Trump also indicated his reluctance to engage in a televised debate with Harris until she is officially confirmed as the Democratic nominee, suggesting that Democrats might still be considering other candidates.
