Toronto Honors Norman Jewison with Commemorative Stamp
On a rainy Wednesday, the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) resonated with music scores from Norman Jewison’s films as the late director was honored with a commemorative stamp by Canada Post. Jewison, a Toronto native who founded the CFC, began his career at the CBC in 1951 and directed his first film, “40 Pounds of Trouble,” in 1962. He received multiple Oscars for his work, including “In the Heat of the Night” and “Moonstruck.”
At the stamp unveiling, comedian Rick Mercer praised Jewison’s Canadian legacy, while director David Cronenberg, set to receive the 2024 Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award at TIFF, highlighted Jewison’s support and enthusiasm for his peers. Jewison’s influence and contributions to the film industry were celebrated with heartfelt tributes, underscoring his impact on Canadian cinema.
Norman Jewison passed away earlier this year at 97, leaving behind a rich legacy of films that addressed social justice and spotlighted marginalized communities. His work continues to inspire filmmakers globally.
