Team Canada Gears Up for 2024 Paris Olympic Games

As the 2024 Paris Olympic Games approach, anticipation is building for Team Canada’s performance. With more than 300 Canadian athletes competing across 32 sports, the stage is set for a thrilling fortnight of competition in the French capital.

Recent Ipsos polling exclusive to Global News reveals a significant uptick in interest for this year’s Summer Games. Nearly six in ten respondents expressed enthusiasm for the Paris Olympics, a notable increase from the 32 percent interest in the 2022 Beijing games and 33 percent for the 2020 Tokyo games. This growing excitement sets a promising tone for Team Canada’s participation.

The Games officially kick off on July 26 with an innovative opening ceremony that breaks from tradition. Starting at 2 p.m. ET, the ceremony will be held on the River Seine, featuring a parade of over 10,000 athletes cruising on boats through the historic waterway. Competitions begin on July 24, ahead of the grand opening, and the Games will conclude on August 11 with the closing ceremony.

The Paralympic Games will follow later in the summer, running from August 28 to September 8.

Canada’s Olympic journey begins on July 25, with the women’s soccer team facing New Zealand in a group A match. Athletic events start on August 1 and continue through to the final day of the Games.

The Paris Olympics will see the debut of breakdancing, also known as breaking, an urban dance style rooted in hip-hop culture. Additionally, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing will return as optional sports after their successful introduction at the Tokyo Games.
