Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, has officially confirmed she is removing “Pitt” from her last name. Shiloh, who turned 18 in May, filed a petition in a Los Angeles County Court to change her name to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie. The announcement was made public in the Los Angeles Times, in accordance with California law, which requires adults seeking a name change to publish their order to show cause documents in a newspaper for four consecutive weeks prior to their court date.

Shiloh’s first notice appeared in the L.A. Times on June 17. Her lawyer, Peter Levine, stated that Shiloh decided to change her last name “following painful events,” though he did not provide further details.

The name change comes amidst a high-profile legal battle between her parents, with Angelina Jolie accusing Brad Pitt of physical and mental abuse towards her and their children.

Levine emphasized that Shiloh made the decision independently and is adhering to the legal process. He clarified that Shiloh did not take out an advertisement to announce her name change, contrary to some media reports. “As Shiloh’s attorney, I am required to publish a legal notice because the law in California requires that of anyone who wants to change their name. That legal notice was published in the Los Angeles Times, as is required,” Levine explained.

The name change is the latest development in the ongoing conflict between Jolie and Pitt, who have been embroiled in legal battles since Jolie filed for divorce in 2016. The ex-couple is currently disputing ownership of the Château Miraval winery in France. Pitt sued Jolie in 2022 after she sold her share of the winery to a Russian oligarch, rather than to him. Jolie’s countersuit claims she sold her portion of the winery after negotiations with Pitt failed, as he allegedly demanded she sign a nondisclosure agreement preventing her from discussing his alleged abuse.

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt’s decision to change her name to Shiloh Jolie marks a significant personal choice amid her parents’ ongoing legal battles. As the legal processes continue, Shiloh’s move to distance herself from the turmoil by adopting her mother’s surname underscores her desire for independence and a fresh start.
