In a significant security measure, the federal government has sanctioned the deployment of the Pakistan Army and Civil Armed Forces (CAF) across the nation to ensure law and order during Muharram. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining peace during this critical period.

The Interior Ministry issued a notification confirming the deployment, which aims to address security concerns throughout Muharram, a month that commenced on Sunday.

The notification detailed that the specific deployment logistics will be coordinated with relevant authorities, including the governments of Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad.

“The date of de-requisitioning of said deployment will be decided subsequently after mutual consultation among all stakeholders,” the notification further elaborated, indicating a flexible end date based on situational needs.

Several provincial governments, notably Punjab, have urged the federal government to suspend social media platforms for one week to prevent the dissemination of hate speech and inflammatory content. Despite these requests, the federal government has not yet made a definitive decision regarding internet service suspensions.

A statement from the Ministry of Interior clarified, “Any decision in this regard will be taken with the consultation of provinces,” highlighting a collaborative approach to this sensitive issue.

The deployment of military and paramilitary forces is seen as a proactive measure to prevent any unrest or violence during Muharram, a period marked by significant religious observances. The government’s actions reflect a broader strategy to ensure the safety and security of all citizens during this time.

The government’s decision to leave the de-requisitioning date open-ended allows for flexibility in maintaining security as needed. Continuous consultations with provincial authorities ensure that measures are tailored to the evolving security landscape.

As Muharram progresses, the federal government’s deployment of the Pakistan Army and CAF stands as a crucial step in upholding law and order across the country. The consideration of social media suspensions further demonstrates the government’s dedication to curbing hate speech and maintaining peace. All eyes remain on the collaborative efforts between federal and provincial authorities to navigate the security challenges during this important month
