Canada Appoints First Female Chief of Defence Staff
In a historic move, Lt.-Gen. Jennie Carignan has been appointed as Canada’s new Chief of Defence Staff, marking a significant milestone as the first woman to hold the position of the country’s top military commander. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement on Wednesday, emphasizing Carignan’s exemplary leadership and dedication throughout her career.
Lt.-Gen. Carignan’s appointment comes as a notable achievement in the Canadian Armed Forces’ ongoing efforts to reform its culture amidst a backdrop of sexual misconduct allegations involving senior leaders. Carignan, currently serving as the Chief of Professional Conduct and Culture, is set to replace Gen. Wayne Eyre, who will retire this summer.

Hailing from Val-des-Sources, Quebec, Lt.-Gen. Carignan is a combat engineer by trade. She has a distinguished 38-year military career, which includes pioneering achievements and numerous accolades. In 2008, she became the first woman to lead a combat force in the Canadian military, demonstrating her trailblazing spirit and command capabilities.
Carignan’s career has seen her deployed to conflict zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan, where she showcased her strategic acumen and resilience. Her commendable service has earned her the Meritorious Service Medal and the Governor General’s Order of Military Merit, further solidifying her legacy in the Canadian Armed Forces.
