In a rare diplomatic exchange, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and India’s newly reelected Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a cordial interaction on the popular social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), extended his congratulations to Narendra Modi for securing a historic third term as Prime Minister of India. Despite facing setbacks in the recent elections, Modi’s party emerged victorious, reflecting the public’s confidence in his leadership.

Nawaz Sharif’s Message: “My warm felicitations to Modi Ji on assuming office for the third time. Your party’s success in recent elections reflects the confidence of the people in your leadership. Let us replace hate with hope and seize the opportunity to shape the destiny of the two billion people of South Asia.”

In a reciprocal gesture, Modi appreciated Nawaz’s message and emphasized the importance of peace and security for the people of both nations.

Narendra Modi’s Reply: “Appreciate your message Nawaz Sharif. The people of India have always stood for peace, security and progressive ideas. Advancing the well-being and security of our people shall always remain our priority.”

The diplomatic exchange extended to Nawaz’s younger brother, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who also congratulated Modi on his reelection. Modi responded to PM Shehbaz’s wishes, highlighting the significance of mutual goodwill.

Modi’s Message to Shehbaz Sharif: “Thank you @cmshehbaz for your good wishes.”

India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed neighbors, have a long history of conflict, including three wars, two of which were over the disputed Kashmir region. Relations have been particularly strained since India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, splitting it into two federally administered territories.

The exchange of greetings between Nawaz Sharif and Narendra Modi marks a hopeful moment in the otherwise tense relations between India and Pakistan. As leaders of these two countries navigate their complex relationship, such gestures of goodwill could pave the way for improved diplomatic ties in the future.
