Canada’s Historic Win: Rugby Team Beats New Zealand
In a landmark victory, Canada’s women’s rugby team achieved a historic win against New Zealand, the reigning World Cup champions, with a 22-19 victory in the Pacific Four Series. This victory marks Canada’s first win over the Black Ferns after 17 previous losses, including a 52-21 defeat last July in Ottawa.
Captain Sophie de Goede expressed immense pride in the team’s accomplishment, stating, “We’ve been knocking on the door and pushing to make a statement on the world stage for Canada for a while now.” The victory has propelled Canada to No. 2 in the world rankings, their highest position since November 2016.
New Zealand led 14-10 at halftime, but Canada’s resolute defense, led by de Goede, kept them in the game. The Canadians made 103 tackles in the first half alone, compared to 46 by the Black Ferns. Despite facing penalties and a significant challenge, Canada maintained their lead through the second half.
Fancy Bermudez was a standout player, scoring two critical tries, while McKinley Hunt added another. De Goede contributed two conversions and a penalty. New Zealand’s Katelyn Vahaakolo also scored two tries, but Canada’s defense held firm, even withstanding a 35-phase attack and a late push from New Zealand.
Canadian prop DaLeaka Menin, celebrating her 55th cap, was emotional about the victory, highlighting the hard work and dedication of the team. Veteran forward Tyson Beukeboom led Canada out on her record 68th career cap, surpassing Rugby Canada Hall of Famer Gillian Florence.
Canada’s win ensures their place in the top division of the WXV tournament, set to be hosted in Vancouver from September to October. Coach Kevin Rouet has guided the team to an impressive 17-7-0 record, with all losses coming against higher-ranked teams.
