This price was significantly lower than what he paid for a concert in Detroit last year, making the trip to Europe financially feasible.
“The difference in price actually covered my flight to Europe,” Kingston remarked, highlighting the attractiveness of attending a Swift concert overseas.
Swift’s Eras Tour has witnessed unprecedented demand, with retail tickets selling out rapidly across North America and Europe. In Canada, ticket prices on secondary markets have skyrocketed, with some listings reaching as high as $2,822 for a single seat. This pricing discrepancy has prompted fans like Kingston to explore alternative options.
According to Pascal Courty, an economics professor at the University of Victoria, the pricing disparity can be explained by basic economic principles. Swift’s European tour consists of 51 shows across 18 cities, accommodating large crowds each night. However, demand for Swift’s music may not be as strong in some European countries compared to North America, leading to lower ticket prices.
In contrast, Canada’s limited number of Swift concerts (just nine) combined with a fervent fan base contribute to the steep ticket prices on the secondary market. Courty suggests that if Swift were to perform more frequently in Canadian cities, ticket prices would likely decrease over time due to demand saturation.
To address ticketing issues, some European countries have implemented regulations to prevent resale at inflated prices. For example, in France, offenders can face significant fines for selling tickets above their original value. Sam Shemtob, managing director of the Face-value European Alliance for Ticketing (FEAT), notes that these regulations have led to a decrease in listings of tickets sold at a profit.
