Ottawa to Spend $1 Billion on Quebec Bridge Restoration

Quebec City, Canada – The federal government has announced a landmark agreement with the Canadian National Railway Company (CN) to acquire the historic Quebec Bridge. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled the deal in Quebec City, outlining a $1 billion investment over the next 25 years dedicated to the bridge’s repair, repainting, and maintenance.

The Quebec Bridge, a 549-metre-long cantilever bridge that spans the St. Lawrence River, connects Quebec City to its south shore. Recognized as the longest cantilever bridge in the world, it is a critical piece of infrastructure and a significant national historic site. Despite the federal government taking ownership of the bridge, CN and the Quebec government will continue to manage and own the rails and roadway that cross the bridge, which accommodates approximately 33,000 vehicles daily.

Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized the federal government’s long-term commitment to preserving the bridge, ensuring its longevity for future generations. The $1 billion allocated will cover extensive repairs, repainting, and ongoing maintenance, effectively extending the bridge’s lifespan by several decades.

The Quebec Bridge, inaugurated in 1917, holds significant historical value. It was designated a national historic site in 1995 due to its remarkable length and pioneering construction using nickel and steel. However, the bridge’s construction was marred by two catastrophic events: a collapse in 1907 that claimed the lives of 76 workers and a subsequent accident in 1916 resulting in 13 more fatalities.
