Summer McIntosh showcased her exceptional talent in the pool during the inaugural Speedo Canadian Swimming Open at the Pan Am Sports Centre on Wednesday night, clinching victory in the 200-metre freestyle event with an impressive time of 1:54.21.

McIntosh’s stellar performance not only secured her first place but also marked the fastest time recorded globally this year, underscoring her dominance in the sport. Her remarkable time would have earned her a gold medal at the prestigious world championship held in Doha earlier this year.

Expressing her satisfaction with the race, McIntosh emphasized her focus on executing her race strategy and achieving her desired splits. Despite modest expectations for the meet, McIntosh highlighted her joy in competing in her hometown of Toronto, where she received unwavering support from her parents, Greg and Jill.

Mary-Sophie Harvey secured the second position with a personal best time of 1:56.76, further highlighting the depth of talent among Canadian swimmers.

For McIntosh, Wednesday night’s triumph is a testament to her rigorous training regimen and dedication to the sport. Following her victory in the 200m freestyle, McIntosh swiftly returned to the pool to compete in the 100m backstroke final, facing tough competition from backstroke specialist Ingrid Wilm and Olympic champion Maggie Mac Neil.

Although narrowly missing out on victory in the 100m backstroke, McIntosh’s performance exemplified the strength and depth of Canadian swimming talent.

Looking ahead, McIntosh remains focused on her Olympic preparations, with the Olympic and Paralympic trials fast approaching. Despite the trials’ relocation to the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre due to unforeseen circumstances, McIntosh is poised to excel, drawing confidence from her familiarity with the venue and the unwavering support of the Toronto crowd.

With McIntosh set to compete in seven different events throughout the competition, the Speedo Canadian Swimming Open serves as a crucial platform for her to refine her skills and further solidify her Olympic aspirations, particularly in individual medleys.
