Incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan has firmly declined the military’s request for an apology regarding the May 9 protests, asserting his innocence and distancing his party from the violent incidents that ensued.

Imran Khan, currently detained in Adiala Jail since August last year, rebuffed the military’s demand for an apology during an informal conversation with journalists, emphasizing that an apology should be sought from him, not the other way around.

The military, through Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), urged individuals involved in the May 9 protests to apologize and renounce “politics of anarchy” before engaging in dialogue. The statement also reiterated the need for accountability and punishment as per the law.

Imran Khan distanced his party from the violent protests, stating that PTI has never resorted to violence in its 27-year history. He condemned the May 9 incidents during a court appearance and expressed willingness to engage in dialogue for the country’s betterment.

Khan supported the call for a judicial inquiry into the 2014 sit-in staged by PTI, emphasizing his readiness to cooperate. He underscored the importance of upholding democratic values and urged against dragging the military into political disputes.

Imran Khan’s refusal to apologize adds another layer of complexity to Pakistan’s political landscape, as tensions between the military and political factions persist. With calls for inquiries and accountability on various fronts, the country faces a critical juncture in navigating its democratic processes and upholding the rule of law.
