Residents of southern Alberta are urged to prepare for an impending storm set to sweep through the region from late Monday into early Wednesday. Environment Canada has issued heavy rainfall warnings for southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan in anticipation of the approaching weather system.

Global Calgary’s chief meteorologist, Tiffany Lizée, warns that southeastern Alberta will bear the brunt of the storm, with expected rainfall ranging from 50 to 70 millimeters and localized pockets potentially seeing up to 80 millimeters.

The heavy downpours pose the risk of flash floods and water accumulation on roadways, prompting concerns of possible washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts. Calgary and Edmonton are also forecasted to experience periods of heavy rain, with Edmonton potentially receiving up to 50 millimeters, equivalent to a month’s rainfall in one event.

In Calgary, rainfall amounts are projected to reach around 25 millimeters before diminishing overnight on Tuesday.

Global Edmonton’s weather specialist, Phil Darlington, highlights the significant precipitation expected in Edmonton, noting that the city typically receives 47 millimeters of rainfall in May. With forecasts predicting approximately 30 to 50 millimeters, residents are advised to brace for potentially challenging conditions.

In Calgary, rainfall amounts are projected to reach around 25 millimeters before diminishing overnight on Tuesday. Additionally, a significant drop in temperatures is anticipated, with highs expected to range from 6 to 9 degrees Celsius in both Calgary and Edmonton, well below the seasonal averages.

West of Calgary, the cooler temperatures may result in precipitation falling as snow, with forecasts indicating accumulations of 10 to 15 centimeters. However, temperatures are predicted to return to seasonal norms by Thursday.

Residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being during the storm. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
