The United Nations Security Council has issued a groundbreaking call for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, marking a significant shift in the stance of the United States, which chose not to veto the resolution. This move underscores growing divergence between the US and its ally Israel over the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group governing Gaza, has expressed readiness to engage in a prisoner exchange process, conditional on reciprocal releases by Israel.

In a landmark decision, the UN Security Council has urged for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, marking a departure from previous stances. The resolution, which also demands the unconditional release of all hostages, signifies a critical development in international efforts to quell the escalating tensions in the region.

The adoption of the resolution by the Security Council, with the US abstaining from vetoing it, underscores a notable shift in the US position regarding the conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office issued a sharp rebuke, accusing the US of “abandoning” its previous stance, which linked a ceasefire to the release of hostages.

The resolution’s passage has been met with both praise and criticism. Palestinian representative Riyad Mansour welcomed the move but criticized its delayed implementation, emphasizing the human cost of the prolonged conflict.

Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group governing Gaza, has expressed readiness to engage in a prisoner exchange process, conditional on reciprocal releases by Israel. The group’s response signals a potential pathway towards de-escalation and peace negotiations.

The US, while supporting the ceasefire objective, refrained from endorsing the resolution due to its failure to condemn Hamas. US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby clarified that the decision did not signify a policy shift but rather a strategic adjustment.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the imperative of implementing the resolution to achieve a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages. The resolution’s passage reflects a critical juncture in international efforts to address the Gaza crisis and mitigate further humanitarian suffering.

The conflict in Gaza erupted following Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel in October, resulting in significant casualties and displacements. The toll of the conflict has escalated, prompting intensified international scrutiny and calls for urgent action to alleviate the humanitarian crisis.
