Snowstorm Alert: Toronto Braces for Evening Commute Chaos
Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, anticipating a snowstorm set to sweep through later today. The warning, stretching from Hamilton to Kingston, warns of significant snow accumulation and potential disruptions to the evening commute.
Expected to commence this morning, the snowfall is projected to intensify by late afternoon or evening before tapering off overnight. Meteorologist Bill Coulter forecasts accumulations of up to 15 cm in some areas, particularly along the north shore of Lake Ontario.
Peak snowfall rates of 2 cm/h are anticipated, with reduced visibility likely to impact road conditions. Environment Canada advises drivers to exercise caution and adjust their driving accordingly. The city recommends allowing extra travel time, especially with ongoing road and transit closures.
Starting tonight, Lakeshore West service will be temporarily suspended for critical track work, affecting travel between West Harbour GO and Union Station until Monday. Pearson International Airport anticipates potential flight disruptions and advises travelers to stay updated on flight statuses.
Despite the snowstorm, temperatures are expected to rise slightly over the weekend, reaching highs of 4°C on Saturday and 3°C on Sunday. Monday is forecasted to see a high of 8°C, signaling a gradual return to milder conditions.
As Toronto prepares for the snowfall, residents are urged to stay informed, plan accordingly, and exercise caution while navigating the wintry conditions.
