As the annual ritual of setting clocks forward approaches, voices advocating for the abolition of daylight saving time grow louder. This Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m. local time, marks the commencement of daylight saving time, urging individuals to adjust their clocks an hour ahead. However, amidst the reminders and customary adjustments, a contentious debate ensues regarding the impacts of this practice on public health.

Irene Shone, a resident of Brampton, Ont., has spearheaded a petition on Change.org, calling for the permanent cessation of daylight saving time. With nearly 75,000 Canadians supporting her cause, Shone highlights the adverse effects of biannual clock adjustments on individuals’ health. She argues that disrupting circadian rhythms, our bodies’ natural cycles, can exacerbate certain health conditions, particularly impacting those with depression and seasonal affective disorder.

Supporting Shone’s stance, the Canadian Sleep Society emphasizes the detrimental effects of daylight saving time on sleep patterns and overall well-being. Not only does it induce sleep deprivation, but it also disrupts circadian alignment, posing challenges for individuals, especially children and students, who must commence their day in darkness.

Echoing these concerns, the American Medical Association calls for an end to daylight saving time, citing significant public health risks associated with clock changes. The organization urges policymakers to recognize the implications on health and safety, advocating for a permanent shift to standard time.

In response to mounting pressure, legislative actions have been taken. In Ontario, the Time Amendment Act was passed in November 2020, offering the prospect of abandoning biannual clock adjustments. However, implementation hinges on similar actions by neighboring regions, demonstrating the complexity of this issue.

Former Ottawa West-Nepean MPP Jeremy Roberts, a proponent of ending daylight saving time, underscores the economic benefits of extended daylight hours. However, critics argue that prioritizing economic interests over public health is shortsighted, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural sleep patterns.

Shone expresses frustration with the prevailing narrative favoring longer daylight hours, stressing the paramount importance of safeguarding individuals’ mental and physical well-being. For her, the pursuit of monetary gains at the expense of health is untenable. She asserts that aligning daily routines with natural light cycles is essential for promoting overall wellness.

As the debate intensifies, advocates for abolishing daylight saving time continue to push for legislative action, emphasizing the imperative of prioritizing public health concerns over economic interests. With growing support for permanent standard time, the quest for a healthier, more balanced approach to timekeeping remains at the forefront of societal discourse.
