Sweden Officially Joins NATO: Strengthening European Security
The accession process, which began two years ago following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reached its culmination in Washington with a ceremonial handover of documents. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity as Sweden’s guiding principles within the alliance.
US Secretary of State Blinken hailed the expansion, highlighting NATO’s bolstered defensive capabilities and expressing gratitude to Sweden for its resilience. Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg underscored Sweden’s valuable contributions to the alliance, noting its capable armed forces and top-tier defence industry.
However, Sweden’s journey to NATO membership faced obstacles, with initial objections from Turkey and Hungary. Turkey’s concerns over Sweden’s alleged support for Kurdish separatists delayed approval, while Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban accused Sweden of hostility. Despite these challenges, both countries eventually ratified Sweden’s bid, underscoring the critical role of solidarity within the alliance.
Reflecting on Sweden’s historical policy of non-alignment, Mr. Blinken emphasized the evolving security landscape that necessitated Sweden’s NATO membership. Mr. Kristersson affirmed Sweden’s commitment to shouldering responsibilities and risks alongside its allies, emphasizing the gravity of the current security situation in the region. With Finland’s formal entry into NATO last year, the alliance’s eastern border with Russia has effectively doubled.
The forthcoming flag-raising ceremony at NATO headquarters in Brussels symbolizes Sweden’s full integration into the alliance and its dedication to European security.
