Zardari Leads in Pakistan’s Presidential Election with 345 Votes
Asif Ali Zardari, Co-Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), emerges as the frontrunner in Pakistan’s upcoming presidential election, bolstered by significant electoral support, sources reveal.
Strong Electoral Backing for Zardari:
The PPP, in alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), secures a formidable 345 electoral votes for Zardari ahead of the presidential election scheduled for March 9, as per sources cited by Geo News.
Committee members briefing PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari highlight the achievement, positioning Zardari as the leading candidate for the coveted post.
Presidential Contest Dynamics:
Zardari is set to face Mahmood Khan Achakzai, chairman of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), nominated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).
Supported by various political entities including the PML-N, MQM-P, PML-Q, and IPP, Zardari eyes his second presidential term, succeeding outgoing president Dr. Arif Alvi.
Electoral Process and Criteria:
The presidential election, governed by constitutional provisions, mandates the president to “represent the unity of the republic” and adhere to specific eligibility criteria.
With the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) already setting the poll date, the electoral process involves a secret ballot in a special session of parliament, Senate, and provincial assemblies, constituting the Electoral College.
The Electoral College comprises 692 votes, including 96 senators, 336 Members of the National Assembly (MNAs), and 260 provincial assembly votes, as per constitutional mandates.
The candidate securing the highest number of votes will be declared the winner, with the chief election commissioner (CEC) overseeing the process, and the federal government officially announcing the results through a public notification.
As Pakistan gears up for its presidential election, all eyes are on Asif Ali Zardari as he navigates the electoral landscape with substantial support, aiming to secure another term as the country’s head of state.
