In a humanitarian response to the recent tragic events in Gaza, the United States military initiated a significant aid effort, dropping food supplies via C-130 cargo planes. This operation comes just two days after a chaotic incident resulted in the deaths of over 100 Palestinians who were attempting to access aid from an aid convoy.

Three C-130 cargo planes from Air Forces Central carried out the operation, dropping 66 bundles containing approximately 38,000 meals over Gaza at 8:30 a.m. EST.

The airdrop, coordinated with Jordan, marks the beginning of a series of planned aid deliveries announced by U.S. President Joe Biden.

The aid initiative aims to provide emergency humanitarian assistance in a safe manner to those in need on the ground.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of aid delivery to the affected population.

The C-130 cargo plane was chosen for its versatility and ability to land in challenging environments, with a capacity to airlift up to 42,000 pounds of cargo.

Air Force loadmasters meticulously secured the aid bundles onto pallets and released them with parachutes upon reaching the designated delivery zone.

Background:

The deadly incident on Thursday saw a large number of Palestinians killed and injured as they sought access to aid supplies. Israel has stated that its troops fired warning shots after feeling threatened by the crowd’s movement.

Gaza has faced severe shortages of essential supplies, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict. The United Nations has warned of a dire humanitarian situation, with a quarter of the population at risk of starvation.

Airdrops, while not the most efficient means of aid distribution, are being utilized as a last resort due to the blockade imposed on Gaza, limiting access to essential goods.

This airdrop operation underscores the international community’s commitment to providing much-needed assistance to those affected by the crisis in Gaza.
