In a bid to ease tensions and secure the release of hostages, U.S. President Joe Biden has expressed hope for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas by early next week. Amid ongoing negotiations facilitated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, Biden anticipates a temporary halt to military activities during the upcoming Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which commences on March 10th.

During an appearance on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, Biden revealed that negotiators are diligently working on a framework deal. The proposed agreement entails Hamas releasing some of the hostages it holds in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners and a six-week cessation of hostilities.

The president emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the need to address the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The proposed ceasefire would facilitate essential repairs to infrastructure and allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the embattled enclave.

However, both sides maintain divergent positions on the terms of the truce, with accusations of stalling and intransigence. Despite the challenges, Biden remains optimistic about the prospects of a resolution, underscoring the importance of finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed Biden’s sentiments, affirming Israel’s readiness to negotiate while urging Hamas to abandon its “outlandish” demands. Netanyahu indicated a willingness to delay a military offensive in Gaza pending the outcome of ceasefire talks, emphasizing the need to prioritize civilian safety.

Meanwhile, the escalating violence continues to exact a heavy toll on Gaza’s civilian population, with the Health Ministry reporting a surge in casualties. The latest bombardment has claimed the lives of 90 individuals and left scores wounded, underscoring the urgency of reaching a ceasefire agreement.

As international pressure mounts to address the humanitarian crisis, the Biden administration remains committed to brokering a lasting peace. With negotiations ongoing, hopes are high for a breakthrough that will bring much-needed relief to the conflict-stricken region.
