In response to reports of Israel’s planned military operation in Rafah, the leaders of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have jointly released a statement calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. They expressed grave concern over Israel’s potential ground offensive, emphasizing its catastrophic consequences. The leaders urged Israel to halt the offensive, while stating that any ceasefire must be reciprocal, necessitating Hamas to disarm and release all remaining hostages.

 

The joint statement highlights the leaders’ grave concern over Israel’s intentions to launch a ground offensive into Rafah. They emphasize the potential catastrophic consequences and stress the urgent need for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

 

Despite growing concerns, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Wednesday that Israel would proceed with its offensive against Hamas in Rafah. The operation aims to target Hamas but will reportedly allow civilians to vacate the area beforehand.

 

While urging Israel to refrain from the offensive, the joint statement emphasizes that any ceasefire must be reciprocal. It calls for Hamas to disarm and immediately release all remaining hostages, emphasizing that a one-sided ceasefire would not be viable.

 

The leaders reference the International Court of Justice’s ruling in a genocide case brought by South Africa. The ruling obligates Israel to protect civilians, provide basic services, and deliver essential humanitarian assistance. The leaders highlight that the protection of civilians is paramount and a requirement under international humanitarian law. They emphasize that Palestinian civilians should not bear the burden of defeating Hamas.
